“what time do we need to be there?”
okay we need to go now then, let’s hurry up…and wait.
“we need to be where when?”
okay we need to get moving, let’s hurry up…and wait.
traveling. airports. security. baggage. immigration. what gate? what terminal? what time? Many say that the act of traveling is a big ‘game’ of hurry up and wait. you can’t be late so you need to hurry up and wait. We speed to get to the destination not taking the time we have to get there. Is hurry going to be the extent of the journey? Although airports and the in-between destinations can be monotonous we were given them for a reason. For God. We were given the middle seat between two strangers for a reason. We were given the flight delay for a reason. We were given that upgrade from economy to first class for a reason…and let me tell you right now if you are given that kind of upgrade oh boy are you in for a treat (and I am not just talking about the ones they serve). Whether you get that upgrade or not we are all in for a treat, a treat from the Almighty, a treat so sweet we can’t help but share it.
As we begin our journey to Thailand there are many things that could have gone different had we pushed a little harder, like the 16 hour layover in South Korea we had. yes SIXTEEN HOURS between the time we land until the time we depart, but as I sit here I am beyond blessed to have that extensive layover. why you ask? Well I got to go outside the walls of the airport and get to experience a little bit of Seoul, South Korea (not to mention the stamp I got in my passport). We all got to meet up with a friend from college who also so happened to be in Korea at the same time we are. We also got to meet some new friends and go to their bible study. I mean how much cooler can you get on a layover than to go visit and encourage other believers…halfway across the world.
With our new friends and old friends we sat down in a little coffee shop called Holly’s Coffee Shop on a street in, may I remind you…SOUTH KOREA (I totally feel so cool right now) and study the word of God.
We read through:
Jesus Comforts His Disciples
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me. My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. You know the way to the place where I am going.”
Jesus the Way to the Father
Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us.”Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work. Believe me when I say that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; or at least believe on the evidence of the works themselves. Very truly I tell you, whoever i in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Personal thought, as I prepared for the mission trip I truly only thought of it as to Thailand. Yes that is where I am/was going but I never took the time to realize the WHOLE trip is part of the mission. And larger than that my whole life encounters are the mission, whether they are halfway across the world or halfway across the room. The journey is included. God placed me in South Korea to encourage those believers, He placed me there to fellowship with friends old and new, He placed me in the coffee shop so the older ladies next to us would see us reading the living word and praying to an everlasting God and maybe even start to wonder about Him for themselves.
Yes this jumps back and forth but as I sit here in my room in Thailand I am reminded that the journey is every part the mission I as the destination while here on earth. We as followers of Christ do not have to wait until we arrive on the field to preach the word of God. We do not have to wait until we step into the walls of a church to hear from the Father and worship His name. Now we can do it, we don’t have to hurry and we don’t have to wait but we were given now for a reason. For Gods’ reason.
